£2 a Litre: Is This the New Normal — and What UK Fleets Should Do About It

FleetEase · fleetease.co.uk · 16 September 2026

On Monday 14 September, the RAC put the average price of diesel at a UK forecourt at 191.68p a litre — the highest since August 2022, and a new peak since the conflict in the Middle East began. Petrol wasn't far behind at 169.68p. And with reports of individual forecourts already charging £2 a litre, a round figure that felt unthinkable eighteen months ago is now staring UK fleet operators in the face.

When prices first spiked back in February, the word everyone used was "spike" — the implication being that it would pass. Six months on, that language is starting to look optimistic. So the honest question for anyone running vans or trucks isn't "when will this blow over?" It's "what do I do if it doesn't?"

⛽ Where prices sit right now

Average UK diesel: 191.68p/litre · Average petrol: 169.68p/litre (RAC Fuel Watch, 14 September 2026). A 55-litre diesel fill is now around £105. Diesel is roughly a third more expensive than it was the day the conflict began.

Why this might not be a blip

Three things are keeping fuel high, and none of them resolves overnight:

Put bluntly: betting your operating budget on prices falling back to 2024 levels is a bet, not a plan.

What £2 diesel actually does to a fleet

Headlines quote the price of a single tank. Fleet owners feel it multiplied across every vehicle, every week. Here's a worked example for a modest 20-van operation.

Annual diesel bill — before the conflict

£60,700

at 142.4p/litre

→

Annual diesel bill — today

£81,700

at 191.68p/litre

That's roughly £21,000 a year in extra fuel cost — before diesel even reaches £2. At a flat £2 a litre, the same fleet spends about £85,200, nudging the increase towards £24,500 a year.

The assumptions behind the numbers

20 vans, 15,000 miles each per year (300,000 miles total), at a real-world 32 mpg. That's about 42,600 litres of diesel a year. Change the mileage or the fleet size and the pounds move, but the shape doesn't: a ~50p jump in the pump price lands almost directly on your bottom line, because fuel is usually the single biggest line in a fleet's running costs.

You can't control the price. You can control the waste.

Here's the uncomfortable truth most fleet managers already suspect: when fuel was cheap, a bit of waste didn't hurt enough to chase. At 191.68p, it does. And the waste is almost always hiding in the same places — the vehicles quietly returning terrible economy, the fuel-card transactions nobody reconciles, and the business mileage that never gets reclaimed from HMRC.

None of that requires expensive telematics hardware to fix. It requires visibility — knowing, per vehicle and per litre, where the money is actually going. That's exactly the gap a fleet management platform closes.

🧾

HMRC-ready exports

Reclaim every eligible business mile. In a high-price year, that reclaim is real money back.

And a quieter one worth naming: a well-maintained vehicle burns less. Under-serviced engines and soft tyres cost fuel every mile, so keeping service schedules and MOTs on track isn't just compliance — at today's prices it pays for itself.

The maths on acting

FleetEase starts at £25/month — about £300 a year. Against the 20-van fleet above, spending roughly £81,700 on diesel, you don't need to find dramatic savings for that to pay back. Trim even 3% of fuel spend by fixing the worst offenders and reclaiming mileage properly, and that's around £2,450 recovered — several times the cost of the software, in the first year.

The point isn't the software cost

£300/yr

vs a fuel bill that's climbed £21,000. The question isn't whether you can afford visibility — it's whether you can afford to keep guessing while diesel sits near £2.

Back in March, when this began, we wrote about what smart fleet managers were doing as oil hit $120 a barrel. Six months on, the advice has only got more urgent — because "temporary" is quietly becoming "normal." If you want the detail on how the fuel side works, our guide to fleet fuel management software walks through it.

Time to act

The businesses that come through expensive years in the best shape aren't the ones who waited for prices to fall. They're the ones who got a grip on the costs they could control — while their competitors were still hoping. Diesel at £2 a litre may or may not be here to stay. Your visibility over it can be.
